The need to measure time has existed for thousands of years: The ancient Egyptians invented the sundial 5,000 years ago. Its circular design and period characterize the appearance of modern watches. However, time measurement relies on sunlight and can therefore only be performed during the day. The water meter brought independence from daylight for the first time. Followed by the hourglass and wheel clock of the 14th century. The latter already contains the first basic element, which can also be found in mechanical watches, but still very inaccurate. The models were equipped with an “Unrast” – the less precise predecessor of the “Unruh” used today – which, however, allowed a relatively even rate.

At that time, the watch was still relatively large, so it was often hung on the chain in the back pocket. Moreover, watches had not yet come into contact with the general public, but primarily adorned the nobility as an expensive luxury.

The clocks were accessible to the “normal people” from the 13th century primarily in marketplaces or in church towers in connection with large bells that drew attention to themselves as soon as the full hour was reached. In the beginning, these were still built / maintained by locksmiths. Later, with the slowly increasing demand for watches, the profession of watchmaker slowly formed.

Finally, in the 15th century, the balance wheel and the hairspring were introduced, which allowed the production of more precise watch models.

The hairspring replaced the long pendulum used in the past, thus laying the foundation for the downsizing of the case. In 1673 Christiaan Huygens created a watch with a hairspring and balance, the watch is relatively small and easy to wear and something like the blueprint for later models.

Thus, nothing more stood in the way of the development of small watches: Only a few decades later, in 1812, Abraham-Louis Breguet (Abraham-Louis Breguet) produced the first known watch at the request of Napoleon’s sister Queen Caroline Murat . The model is already attached to the wrist with a strap. Previously, men hung their timepieces on the chains of their vests. Women wear them around their necks, and this trend will continue for almost a century. The watch was slow to make its way into social life, and it was not until the end of the 19th century that its simple design made it an integral part of many women’s wardrobes. Even though it doesn’t seem to have much in common with today’s pilot watches with unique bezels, it simultaneously laid the foundation for one of the most successful watch categories ever. With the outbreak of the First World War, their use expanded to many areas where free hands with a simultaneous overview of time were indispensable. Even today you can see that many series have their origins in professional and military use. Breitling Navitimer and other series are equipped with additional and extra features that facilitate the pilots of the time to navigate: for example, the rotating slide rule bezel allows precise flight calculations directly on the wrist without any other tools tool. On-board computers are currently replacing this function. The traditional history is still reflected in the design of the watch and the slide rule bezel gives it an eye-catching appearance. Other series, such as the Rolex Air-King, focus on simple design and good legibility even in low light conditions.

Although many series were designed for professional use, after a short time the models entered the free market and soon found fans among the civilian population. However, the era of pocket watches is also not over: for a long time, pocket watches and watches coexist, but the rapid development of the wristwatch has ensured its increasing popularity. The demands of the war still influenced their features: luminous hands improved readability, shock-resistant case and scratch-resistant glass are still important features that were added or constantly developed.

The first automatic watch was developed in the 1920s – Rolex dominated the gazettes in 1926 with its waterproof Oyster case and contributed significantly to the success of the watch through high-profile advertising. To prove the waterproofness of the Oyster case, founder Hans Wilsdorf outfitted swimmer Mercedes Gleitze with a Rolex on her wrist as she attempted to cross the English Channel. The record attempt failed due to unfavorable weather conditions. Nevertheless, this watch survived five hours in cold water unscathed – success was unstoppable. In 1931, Rolex introduced the Oyster Perpetual Watch, which was the first automatic watch to replace the cumbersome hand-wound movement.

The watch industry on the brink, the first crisis in the quartz watch market and its consequences.

The first electric clock with quartz technology was developed as early as the 1930s. At that time, these models were very expensive, bulky and were only produced in small batches for scientific purposes. The original model either relied on a power source or the battery was too large to be suitable for transport.

The real breakthrough came in the development of semiconductor technology, which enabled manufacturers to produce miniature movements. Seiko, Patek Philippe and Junghans presented their first battery-powered table clock. However, its purchase price is still higher than that of mechanical watches, so it was not a serious competitor. However, the development of integrated circuits on divider stages provided an evolution on the market and changed this condition quite quickly. In the 1970s, the watch market expanded to include a variety of electric watches, mainly manufactured in Japan. In accuracy and economy, they far surpass their mechanical counterparts. Seiko Astron was the name of the first electric watch, bought in a store in 1969. The model was still very expensive, but shortly after the price dropped rapidly.

The movement of a quartz watch consists of fewer parts, therefore the production costs are low and it can be mass produced. Other models of cheap watches flooded the market and plunged the long-established mechanical watch manufacturers into crisis. Watch manufacturers around the world struggled with the consequences. Smaller manufacturers in particular disappeared completely, but large and medium-sized companies also had to file for bankruptcy. Only some of them could be saved. By 1970, only 600 of the original 1,600 watchmakers remained in Switzerland. The quartz boom didn’t stop at traditional brands like Rolex, with the launch of the Rolex Oyster Quartz. So far, the first and only Rolex equipped with a quartz movement. However, the merger of ASUAG (Allgemeine Schweizerische Uhrenindustrie AG) and SSIH (Société Suisse de l’Industrie Horlogère) subsequently helped the country to take off. With the “Swatch”, the merger produces a competitive electric watch, which has fewer components, so that the production cost is low, and thus helped the local watch industry to regain a higher stability.

By the end of the 1980s, the market had recovered. Mechanical watches are enjoying a resurgence in popularity, especially in the higher-priced sections, thanks to their easier-to-understand functions and handcrafted manufacturing. “Swiss made” once again became the quality standard and dominated the watch market. Even though the crisis brought some companies into insolvency, it brought positive results: New manufacturing processes were developed and perfected, companies were repositioned and focused on particularly high-performance series. What has changed is the general orientation: the Swiss watch industry no longer covers only high-end price segments, but focuses on affordable timepieces with quartz technology that can keep up with the Asian competition.
